إن لكل علم سواء كان إنسانياً أم صرفاً، مفاهيمه ومصطلحاته الخاصة به يصكها وينحتها علماؤه من أجل تحديد متون مفرداته وتقويم شروحات علمية دقيقة عن متغيرات الظاهرة وعلاقتها بعضها ببعض للباحثين والدارسين لتعريفهم على ما موجود من تطورات في عملهم. وعلم الاجتماع كباقي العلوم الإنسانية والصرفة بدأ بهذه المهمة العلمية منذ ميلاده حيث كانت لدى علمائه وباحثيه مفاهيم ومصطلحات عن الفرد والمجتمع والثقافة الاجتماعية وما يحصل بينهم من علائق وارتباطات وظواهر ومشكلات وأنماط وأنساق.
يبد أن هذا المؤلف اختار حالة واحدة من حالات المصطلحات الاجتماعية وهي الحالة الثانية، فقام بتجميعها لأنها متناثرة بين مؤلفات هذا العم بدون تصنيف وتبويب فذهبت إلى تصنيفها وتبويبها إلى الأبواب الآتية: اختص الفصل الأول بعرض ما هي الثنائيات ولماذا ظهرت في علم الاجتماع وما هي سلبياتها وإيجابياتها، وجاء الفصل الثاني مبيناً الثنائية الكبرى في هذا العلم وهي الأمريكية والأوروبية والبريطانية والفرنسية صفاتها وخواصها ودواعيها عند كل منهما، وفي الفصل الثالث الذي خصص لطرح الثنائيات المتناقضة الواردة في علم الاجتماع القديم والحديث، وانطوى الفصل الرابع على الثنائيات المترادفة ونوقشت من وجهة نظر سوسيولوجية وتضمن الفصل الخامس على الثنائيات المقترنة بينما احتوى الفصل السادس على الاستدراكات المعاصرة التي تناولها علماء الاجتماع المعاصرين.
