لقد اختلف صورة الوليد بن يزيد في الروايات التاريخية، وصورته في شعر الشعراء الإسلاميين والمخضرمين الذين أدركوا الدولتين الأموية والعباسية، فشخصيته في الروايات التاريخية منحلة منحرفة، وشخصيته في القصائد الأموية معتدلة مستقيمة! لذلك قام المؤلف بدراسة سيرته درساً وافياً حيث قام بجمع أخبار الوليد وأشعاره في كتب التاريخ والأدب المطبوعة والمخطوطة المتاحة. وتعقب المصادر تعقباً تاريخياً دقيقاً وعرضها على الوقائع والأحداث والحقائق الثابتة.
وقسم البحث الى ستة فصول، أولها لمولد الوليد وأسرته، وثانيها لتعليمه وثقافته، وثالثها لترفه وملاهيه، ورابعها لعلاقته بهشام بن عبد الملك، وخامسها لخلافته وسياسته، وسادسها لقتله ونتائجه. وقد اتبع المنهج التاريخي في عرض الموضوعات التي عالجها في فصول البحث، لأنه يؤدي الى رسم سيرة الوليد رسماً محكماً، ويعين على إنزاله في منزله الصحيح من سياق الحياة الاجتماعية والحضارية والسياسية في العصر الأموي.
