لما كان موضوع الإمامة من أبرز الموضوعات المصنفة في كتب علم الكلام، وهو من المواضيع القديمة الجديدة، التي ظهرت على الساحة وفي الفكر الإسلامي، وكتب الفرق، وعلم الكلام قديماً، ولا يزال يظهر كذلك ويبحث في وقتنا الحاضر، وهو من المواضيع التي قد تعد شائكة في الفكر الإسلامي، إذ أن الإمامة موضع خلاف بين الفرق الإسلامية: من سنة، وشيعة، وخوارج، وغيرهم، فبعضهم يعد الإمامة من الأصول العقدية، ويعدها ركناً من أركان الإسلام او أركان الإيمان، فهو بذلك يطرحها في كتب العقائد والأصول، ويحكم على من يعتقد إعتقاده في الإمامة بأنه مسلم أو مؤمن، ويحكم على مخالفه بالكفر والضلال.
وبعض هذه الفرق تعد الإمامة من فروع الدين، وتطرحها في كتب الفقه لأنها النظام السياسي أو نظام الحكم في الإسلام، حتى وإن عقدوا لها باباً متأخراً في كتب علم التوحيد، فهم إنما لجأوا لذلك تماشياً مع ما فرضه عليهم من اعتبرها من الأصول وذلك من أجل الرد عليهم، وليس تسليماً لهم بذلك.
وثمة خلاف واضح بين وجوب الإمامة وعدم وجوبها من جهة، وبين طريق ثبوت الإمامة والأحق بها من جهة أخرى، هذا كله، يدعو إلى تجلية هذا الموضوع ودراسة هذه القضية دراسة تأصيلية، يتعرف بها المسلم على موضوع الإمامة عند فرق المسلمين، ليعرف أسباب جعلها من الأصول، وبأي معنى، أو كونها من الفروع، وبأي معنى، وكيف لنا أن ننظر إليها في زمننا بغير روح التعصب، ووضعها في مكانها المناسب من بنية الإسلام عقيدةً ونظاماً، وهذا ما قام به هذا الكتاب.
