لقد كان الدافع لكتابة هذه الدراسة عن أحمد أمين شيئين: أولهما أن الدراسات الحديثة قليلة عنه فيكون هذا الكتاب عنه مساهمة منا في تعريف الناشئة بالرجل وتراثه الإسلامي الخالد.
كذلك إليه يرجع الفضل كواحد من الذين أنشأوا لجنة التأليف والترجمة والنشر التي قدر لها أن تغذي الحياة الادبية بسيل من كتب التراث العربي والإسلامي كانت المكتبة العربية في أشد الحاجة إليها يضاف إلى ذلك "مجلة الثقافة" التي قدر لها أن تقود الحركة الفكرية ردحاً من الزمن منذ صدور عددها الأول في يناير سنة 1939 حتى توقفت عن الصدور، فشاركت في إثراء الحياة الأدبية، كما تشارك الفرق المختلفة في الجيش الواحد حسب تعبيره حينما قدم عددها الأول لقراء العربية في العالم العربي والإسلامي على حد سواء.
وثانيهما: إنني خلال قراءتي لمجلة "الهلال" بعددها الصادر في مايو 1971 لفت نظري مقال كتبه أحد الصحفيين عن أحمد أمين بمناسبة ذكراه السابعة عشرة يقول في سطوره الأولى "إن الذين رأوا شهرة الشيخ الدكتور أحمد أمين في حياته لم يخطر ببالهم أن مصيرها إلى إنتهاء، وإن الصمت المطبق سيعاجل اسم هذا الرجل اللامع المشهور فيحجب آثاره الأدبية والفكرية التي كان لها في عهدها القريب دوي بعيد".
