فالح عبد الجبار، (مواليد بغداد 1946م - وتوفي يوم 26 فبراير 2018م في بيروت عاصمة لبنان)، عالم اجتماع عراقي، غادر العراق عام 1978. عمل أستاذًا وباحثًا في علم الاجتماع في جامعة لندن، مدرسة السياسة وعلم الاجتماع في كلية بيركبيرك، والتي كان قد حصل فيها على شهادة الدكتوراه. وقد عمل سابقا محاضرا في جامعة لندن الحضرية، ومنذ عام 1994 قاد مجموعة بحث المنتدى الثقافي العراقي في كلية بيركبيك. عمل سابقًا مديرا للبحث والنشر في مركز الدراسات الاجتماعية للعالم العربي التي يوجد مقرها في نيقوسيا وبيروت (1983-1990).
تخصص بدراسة الفكر السياسي والاجتماعي في الشرق الأوسط، وتتناول أعماله: الدين، ودور القانون، والصراع الديني، والمجتمع المدني.

يتفق كثيرون من الباحثين والمتابعين لصعود ظاهرة "داعش"، على أنه يرتبط جوهرياً بقبول "الحاضنة الاجتماعية" المفترضة له، وعلى أنه لم يكن ممكناً، لولا القبول الضمني من هذه الحاضنة، أن تكون "داعش" أداةَ انتقام من السياسات التي مارستها الحكومة المركزية في العراق. هذه فرضية خاضعة للنقاش والتعديل.
ويعبّر هذا الصعود الذي تُوّج بالسيطرة على مدينة الموصل في عام 2014 عن الأزمة الوجودية التي تعيشها الدولة المشرقية العربية: أزمة إخفاقها في بناء سياسات تنطلق من الاعتراف بتعدُّد الهويات الذي يَسِم مجتمعات المشرق العربي، وفي عبور منطق تَغالُب الهويات الذي وسم هذه الدولة بعد نحو قرن من إنشائها مع اللحظة الكولونيالية. لكن تنظيم "داعش" و"الدولة الإسلامية"، هما ظاهرة أكثر تعقيدًا من كونهما مجرد "أداة انتقام" بأيدي أطراف من المجتمع المحلي الذي يطلق عليه جُل الباحثين صفة "الحاضنة الاجتماعية" بل هو حراك واتجاه أيديولوجي يُعبّران عن تيار اجتماعي قائم منذ أمد بعيد، ولم يختف هذا التيار يوماً من حياتنا في العالمَيْن العربي والإسلامي، وإن تعددت أشكاله، وإن تحولت قواه المجتمعية بتحوُّل البنية الاجتماعية في منطقتنا. أما شروط تشكّله فترتبط بأزمة الدولة وعجزها إزاء مطلبَيْن .
