الترسل أو المراسلة فن من الفنون الأدبية التي عرفها العرب منذ العصر الجاهلي. كما عرفته الآداب العالمية منذ عصر سحيق. وقد ازدهر الترسل في العصر الأموي بعد أن أنشأ الخلفاء الأمويون "الدواوين" التي كانت تهتم بشؤون المراسلات بين الخلافة وسائر المرتبطين بها من ولاة، وقادة، وأمراء، وغيرهم، وما لبث أن ظهرت طبقة الكتاب التي كانت تنتظم أعمالها في مجموعة من الأصول والآداب التي يجب على الكتاب اتباعها، وأصبحت الرسائل التي تركها بعض هؤلاء الكتاب تراثاً أدبياً قيما في ميادين السياسة والإدارة والتوجيه والأخلاق وغير ذلك.
وهذا الكتاب يضم بين طياته طائفة متنوعة أروع الرسائل المدونة قديماً وحديثاً وهي بشكل عام موزعة على أبواب خمسة هي: الباب الأول: من رسائل البنى صلى الله عليه وسلم، الباب الثاني: من رسائل الملوك والخلفاء والأعيان، الباب الثالث من رسائل العشاق، الباب الرابع من رسائل العتاب واللوم والاستعطاف والاعتذار، الباب الخامس: من رسائل الشكر والتهنئة والتقربة.
