إن رواية حياة لاثاريو دي تورميس وحظوظه ومصائبه، لكاتبها المجهول الهوية، أو ما منحناه هنا عنواناً آخر دال هو " مقامات لاثارو حسب ما وصلتنا محفوظة في طبعاتها المتوفرة الأولى، وهي الطبعات التي تعود إلى العام 1554، إنما تعد فاتحة الرواية الأوربية المعاصرة والتي ابتدأتها آداب وفنون ما سمي بعصر النهضة، أو العصر الذهبي. وابتداءً بها وليس بغيرها تتالت أعمال أخرى سواء باللغة الإسبانية أو بلغات أخرى، مما جعلها تشكل نمطاً روائياً جديداً سيحمل تسمية، ستخلق ولا شك ، شكلاً متفرداً ورائداً في الأدب النثري العالمي، وهو ما نعنيه هنا: الرواية الواقعية.
إن رواية "لاثارو" تعد تلخيصاً دقيقاً ونافذاً لنمط الرواية التي أطلق عليه وما يزال بالرواية الصعلوكية أو رواية البيكاريسك، وهي عصب بدء الخطوة الأولى نحو واقعية روائية، والتي شرع على منوالها كتاب معروفون مثل دانييل دوفو، أو مارك توين وغيرهما الكثير.
وهو النمط الذي يصور حياة التشرد والصعلكة متتبعاً حياة الفرد منذ طفولته أحياناً كثيرة وصولاً إلى نقطة حاسمة تختم بها سلسلة المغامرات والمقامات التي عاشها البطل بسرورها ومصائبها، كما يجري هنا مع لاثارو دي تورميس. وهي على هذا تجري بالشخص الأول، على لسان بطلها، مما يمنحها طابعاً بيوغرافياً توثقياً، كما عليه أعمال السيرة الذاتية، وإن جاءت كعمل حكائي (Ficcion).
