إن الفصول السبعة التي يتألف منها هذا الكتاب هي نصوص سلسلة من المحاضرات ألقيت في جامعة كورنيل في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية تحت اسم "محاضرات ميسنجر"، أمام جمهور من السامعين يتألف من طلاب يريدون أن يُغنوا معارفهم العامة عن "طبيعة القانون الفيزيائي" وقد كانت هذه المحاضرات ارتجالاً تنظمه بضعة رؤوس أقلام دون نصوص مكتوبة مسبقاً.
إن محاضرات ميسنجر كانت تلقى في كورنيل كل عام منذ أن تبرع ج.ج.ميسنجر (الذي كان طالباً ثم أستاذ للرياضيات في الجامعة عام 1924) بمبلغ من المال لتغطية نفقات مشاهير الأعلام الذين يفدون من جميع أنحاء العالم ليتحدثوا إلى الطلاب. وفي تشرين الثاني (نوفمبر) 1934 دعي الأستاذ رتشارد ب.فاينمان الفيزيائي والعلم الشهير، لإلقاء محاضرات ذلك العام.
وفصول هذا الكتاب هي تلك المحاضرات التي ألقاها الأستاذ فاينمان على جمهور حاشد، من منبر واسع يؤمن له الحرية الكاملة في التعبير والحركة لأنه، كمحاضر ذي سمعة دولية، قد اشتهر بحركاته المعروفة على ساحة المنبر. إن هذا الكتاب يريد أن يكون دليلاً أو كتاب تذكرة لمشاهدي التلفزيون الذين يرغبون، بعد أن حضروا المحاضرات في أن يحتفظوا لها بذكرى راسخة. وبالرغم من أنه لا يجب أن يعتبر، بحال من الأحوال كتاباً مدرسياً فإن كثيراً من المحاكمات الواردة فيه يمكن أن تنير الطريق للطالب الذي يحاول أن يتفهم قوانين الفيزياء بصورة أوضح. هذا وإن ريتشارد فاينمان يعرفه، قبل الآن، مشاهدو التلفزيون البريطاني كأحد الفيزيائيين الذين قدمهم فيليب دالي في برنامجه المسمى "رجال في قلب الطبيعة" وفي إسهامه الرائع في "غرابة ناقص ثلاثة" أحد أمتع برامج 1964 حول الاكتشافات العلمية الحديثة. ولمن يريد أكثر الإلمام بما جاء في هذه المحاضرات، فذاك عناوين المحاضرات التي ألقاها فاينمان: قانون التثاقل: مثال على القانون الفيزيائي، رابطة الرياضيات بالفيزياء، تناظر قوانين الفيزياء، التمييز بين الماضي والمستقبل، الاحتمال، الصفات الكمومية للطبيعة، طرائق البحث عن قوانين جديدة...
