تتمتع دراسة فيزياء الظواهر الطبيعية بأهمية علمية كبيرة، إذ تعتبر الطبيعة بحدّ ذاتها مختبراً فيزيائياً ضخماً، يظهر بشكل جليّ وحدة الصورة الفيزيائية للعالم والترابط فيما بينهما، وكذلك شرطيّة تقسيم علم الفيزياء إلى أقسام مستقلة، والعلاقة المتبادلة بين هذه الظواهر الفيزيائية. لنأخذ على سبيل المثال لا الحصر "الصاعقة" فهي تخضع لقوانين علم الميكانيك والفيزياء الجزئية والكهرباء الساكنة والترموديناميك والهيدروستاتيك والإلكترونيات وعلم البصريات في آنٍ واحد.
يعرف طلاب المدارس وغيرهم من المثقفين العلميين كيف يعمل محرك السيارة بشكل عام، وما هي فائدة شجرة الوصل، ولماذا يندفع الصاروخ، وماهيّة مسرِّع الجسيمات. وما هو المفاعل النووي والليزر، ولكنهم قد لا يعلمون سبب تلوّن السماء بلونها الخاص المعروف، ولا كيف تتشكل غيمة الصاعقة؟ لماذا يؤثر البرق باتجاه الأرض ولا يؤثر باتجاه الأعلى؟ أو مم يتشكل قوس قزح المزدوج؟ وما هي الهالة؟ وما هو الإشعاع الأخضر؟ وما هي الغيوم الفضية؟... الخ.
ولأن فهم هذه العلميات التي تحدث في الطبيعة يعتبر أساس العلاقة معها، ولأن الإمكانيات الفنية والتقنية المتوفرة لدى الإنسان اليوم ليست بقادرة على تشويه معالم الطبيعة فحسب، وإنما هي قادرة على أن تديرها أيضاً.
جاء هذا الكتاب الذي يتكلم عن العديد من الظواهر الطبيعية الهامة، والتي يعرف بعضها مثل غروب الشمس، الضباب الغيوم، البرق، قوس قزح، العواصف... الخ. وبعضها الآخر غير معروف عند العامة كالسراب بأنواعه، الهالات القطبية، البرق الكروي، الانهيارات الثلجية، الغيوم الفضية، الإشعاع الأخضر وغيرها.
هذا ويتألف الكتاب من عدة فصول، كل فصل يتضمن حكاية "عن ظاهرة طبيعية وما يرتبط بها أو يتفرغ عنها من ظواهر أخرى، ويفتتح الفصل بمقدمة أسطورية أو تاريخية ترتبط ارتباطاً مباشراً بالظاهرة المدروسة، ثم نبذة مختصرة تسجل نتائج مراقبة العلماء لهذه الظاهرة، وتحليلاتهم التي سجلوها من هذه الظاهرة مع مناقشتهم لميكانيكيتها الفيزيائية.
