إن علوم القرآن غزيرة، وضروبها جمة كثيرة. فكان على من أزمع الخوض في علم التفسير الجليل الإحاطة بهذه العلوم، والتمكن منها، ليكون من أهل التفسير. هذا وإن أسباب النزول هو أحد هذه العلوم إذ على المفسر إبانة ما أنزل بالآيات من الأسباب، إذ هي أوفى ما يجب الوقوف عليها، وأولى ما تصرف عنايته المفسر إليها، لامتناع تفسير الآية وقصد سبيلها، دون وقوفه على قصتها وبيان سبب نزولها، هذا ولا يحل القول في أسباب نزول الكتاب، إلا بالرواية والسماع ممن شاهدوا التنزيل ووقفوا على الأسباب.
واليوم تبدو الحاجة ماسة لطالبي هذا العلم، لكتاب جامع لأسباب النزول فجاء هذا الكتاب الذي يفي بتلك الحاجة فينتهي إليه طالبوا هذا الشأن والمتكلمون في نزول القرآن، فيعرفوا الصدق ويستغنوا عن التمويه والكذب، ويجدوا في تحفظه بعدما اطلعوا على ماهيته. وكان لا بد للمؤلف في البدء من الحديث حول مبادئ الوحي وكيفية نزول القرآن ابتداءً على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وتعهد جبريل إياه بالتنزيل، والكشف عن تلك الأحوال، والقول فيها على طريق الإجمال منتقلاً بعد ذلك لجوهر الموضوع وهو تفريع القول مفصلاً في سبب نزول كل آية روي لها سبب مقول، مرويّ منقول.
