مستلهماً من الفكر الدنيوي للكاتب الإيطالي جيمباتيستا فيكو، الذي بالنسبة إليه التاريخ هو من صنيعة الإنسان، وليس الله، فإن النزعة الأنسانية العابرة للأوطان عند سعيد تندرج في عالم ما بعد أوروبي، عالم استوعب وتجاوز تجارب النزعة المركزية الأوروبية وتجارب الإمبراطورية، وأحدث ثورة كوبرنيكية، تسعى إلى تطويع العالم وتكييفه مع عالم معولم أكثر فأكثر، متنوّع، وغير متمركز أوروبياً: النزعة الأنسنية والإنسانيات يجب أن يتطوّرا لمواجهة تعقيد العالم ما بعد الكولونيالي، بشتاته، وهجراته، وهجنته، يقوم الطابع الديمقراطي للنزعة الأنسنية على القراءة النقدية والتساؤل الحر، في ديمقراطية واعية بذاتها، متعدّدة الثقافة، ومتعدّدة اللغة. يتوخّى سعيد العودة إلى أصول النزعة الأنسنية، وليس المثالية الإنسانوية المرتبطة بالإنسان المجرد التي انحرفت وفسُدت في حروب وصراعات القرن العشرين، النزعة الأنسنية الحقيقية التي تطالب بالفعل، وتدين النزعة الإمبريالية وانحرافاتها. النزعة الأنسنية عند سعيد ليست توحيدية أو طوباوية، بل أنسنية علمانية، تساهم بـ «رؤية دنيوية تامة»، وتتعارض مع كل منظور ديني. يعارض سعيد المواقف المعادية للنزعة الأنسنية في تيار البنيوية وما بعد البنيوية التي تدين النزعة الأنسنية لطابعها النخبوي، ونفحتها البرجوازية. لم يكن سعيد مستعداً للإعلان عن "موت الإنسان" على طريقة ميشيل فوكو، الذي يقيم قطيعة مع تصوّر الذات الفاعلة الحرة والعقلانية المنحدرة من عصر النهضة؛ حيث يرى فوكو أن الإنسان ليس فاعلاً، بل مُشكّلاً ومَبنيناً من قبل الخطاب.
