لا يختلف الباحثون في التاريخ الحديث والمعاصر بشأن أهمية الوثيقة في الكتابة التاريخية وفي الاعتماد على المذكرات الشخصية في دعم المذكرات الشخصية في دعم المعلومات التي تتضمنها الوثائق. مع أن هناك رؤية نافذة وناقدة للواقع التاريخي للمعلومات التي تسلط الضوء على الأحداث التاريخية التي تمثل منعطفاً في التفسير والاستنتاج لا سيما فيما يختص بمؤلفات المذكرات الشخصية، فهي إنما تعبر عن رأي كاتبها وصاحب المذكرات فها حيث تتدخل عوامل عديدة في صياغتها وصياغة مفرداتها اللغوية والمشاهدات الشخصية التي كان لصاحب المذكرات دور فيها.
ولما كانت المذكرات مصدراً للكتابة التاريخية فقد عقد قسم الدراسات التاريخية في بيت الحكمة ندوة موسعة أسهم فيها عدد من الباحثين العرب والعراقيين ببحوث تناولوا فيها جوانب متعددة في الموضوع وأسهم الحضور الكرام إسهاماً ثراً في مناقشاتهم ومداخلاتهم.
