موشيه شاريت، صاحب هذه اليوميات (الذي عرف أيضاً باسم موسى شرتوك) (1894-1965)، الذي كان رئيساً للدائرة السياسية في الوكالة اليهودية (1933-1984)، وأول وزير خارجية في إسرائيل (أيار/مايو 1948-حزيران/يونيو 1956)، وثاني رئيس لحكومتها (كانون الثاني/يناير 1954-تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 1955)، هو واحد من الزعماء الصهيونيين البارزين، الذين قاموا بدور مهم في إنشاء الكيان الصهيوني زهاء ثلاثة وعشرين عاماً متتالية (1933-1956). و"يوميات" شاريت هذه، هي بصورة عامة، عبارة عن تسجيل شبه يومي، مع بعض الفجوات، لنشاط صاحبها ومواقفه وأفكاره وآرائه وسياسته، بصفته وزيراً للخارجية، ورئيساً للحكومة خلال فترة التأسيس، كما أنها تعرض مواقف الآخرين، من إسرائيليين وغيرهم، ممن كانت لهم علاقة بالمشكلات التي واجهتها إسرائيل خلال هذه الفترة، أو المسائل التي شغلت الزعامة الإسرائيلية. ولا تكتسب هذه اليوميات أهميتها من شخصية كاتبها وحسن اطلاعه، بحكم مناصبه على الأقل، على الأمور التي يتحدث عنها فحسب، بل لأنها أيضاً تتناول فترة انتقالية، تحولت السياسة الإسرائيلية خلالها من وضع اتصف بـ "الميوعة" وعدم "وضوح الرؤية" و"فقدان الثقة"، كان قد سيطر عليها في مطلع الخمسينات، إلى حالة تبلور معها العداء الكبير للعرب، في منتصف ذلك العقد، على شكل لازمها خلال فترة طويلة. وأهمية "اليوميات" تكمن في إلقائها الضوء على مختلف العوامل التي أدت إلى ذلك التحول.
هذه اليوميات هي سجل يومي لنشاطات شاريت ومواقفه وسياساته وآرائه عندما كان موظفاً في الوكالة اليهودية، ثم وزيراً لخارجية إسرائيل، وأخيراً رئيساً للحكومة (9 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 1953-20 حزيران/يونيو 1956). ولذا فهي تشكل مرجعاً أولياً لا غنى عنه، ووثيقة مهمة تلقي الضوء على هذه الفترة من تاريخ إسرائيل.
