لقد كان الهدف الأساسي لكل دراساتي وأعمال العلمية طوال 30 عاماً هو إقامة صناعة عربية مستقلة للإعلام والإتصال، وأنا أعتبر أن إقامة هذه الصناعة هو دفاع عن حرية الوطن واستقلاله وحق الأمة في إقامة النهضة وتحقيق التقدم. ولذلك أدركت في مرحلة متقدمة من حياتي أن الدراسة العلمية المتعمقة لأوضاع الإعلام العالمي مرحلة ضرورية ومهمة لتحقيق هذا الهدف الكبير. فلا بد أن نفهم المناخ الإعلامي الذي نعمل في إطاره، ونتعرف على الآليات والنظريات التي تحكم عمل النظام الإعلامي العالمي. هذه الدراسة يمكن أن تكشف لنا عن فرص يمكن أن نستغلها لبناء صناعتنا الإعلامية، وزيادة ثروتنا الثقافية. وربما يكون من أهم أسباب ضعف الإعلام العربي أن الصحفيين العرب لم يدرسوا الإعلام الدولي، ولم يدركوا الكثير من الحقائق التي كان يمكن أن تتيح لهم البحث عن وسائل لتمييز المضمون الذي يقدمونه للجمهور، ومنافسة الوسائل الإعلامية الغربية. لذلك فقد قررت أن أكتب هذا الكتاب للتدريس في الجامعات، وحاولت أن أبسط القضايا المعقدة، وأن أشرح المصطلحات الصعبة وأن أستخدم مصطلحات مفهومة وواضحة. في الوقت نفسه حاولت أن أحقق بهذا الكتاب هدفاً آخر هو أن افتح المجال لمناقشة عظيمة جديدة لأوضاع الإعلام الدولي تتبناها جامعاتنا العربية، وتتيح لنا مواصلة الكفاح ضد السيطرة الأمريكية على النظام الإعلامي الدولي، ولتحرير الجنوب من التبعية والإستعمار الثقافي. ولأن الموضوعية الحقيقية هي أن يكشف الباحث بوضوح عن تحيزاته قبل أن يبدأ البحث حتى يفهم الجميع مواقفه فإنني أعيد التذكير بما يعرفه كل تلاميذي عني. فأنا باحث أحمل هموم الجنوب الفقير الذي أرى أن الإستعمار الغربي هو الذي أضعفه وأفقره، وأن عليه أن يواصل رحلة الكفاح من أجل التحرر من هذا الإستعمار بكل أشكاله.
