صباح خليل، لاجئ من كوردستان، هو الشخصية الرئيسية في الرواية، يهاجر من أربيل إلى أمستردام، في رحلة طويلة ومتعبة، يدفع فيها ما ورثه عن والده لمجموعة من المهربين. يتورط صباح في الأحلام الملونة عن أوروبا عبر شخصية كوردية عادت منها إلى كوردستان. ثم يتورط بتفاصيل الواقع المختلف، وتفاصيل اللجوء المؤلمة. رواية "لاجئ… من أربيل إلى أمستردام" ليست رواية كلاسيكية، لكنها رواية يستخدم فيها الكاتب أدوات تطوير لاكتشاف التقلبات معتمداً فيها على وصف التفاصيل الدقيقة مع قصة بناء محكمة تتعدد فيها الذروات بتعدد الشخصيات واختلاف الأماكن.
