لعل الإقتراب من تاريخ بني أمية منطقة خطرة يرتجف أمامها القلب قبل القلم لما يشكله تاريخها من إنجازات للدولة الإسلامية وإرتكسات في الوقت نفسه، ولما يحيطها من ميول وأهواء لرواة تاريخها حيث يجد المؤرخ نفسه أمام تاريخ لا يصح أن يطلق عليه سوى أنه الحقيقة من وجهة نظر رواة الأخبار، وهي ليست الحقيقة التي جرت على الواقع، بل مما أرادها الرواة الذين ينتمون لمختلف الأحزاب السياسية التي ظهرت آنذاك، والتي كان جُلُّها معارضاً لبني أمية.
وقد عرض المؤرخون المحدثون في دراساتهم للأسرة الأموية بعد سقوط دولتها على مقاتل الأمويين، والمعاملة السيئة التي تعرضوا لها على يد العباسيين، كما اهتم بعضهم بالثورات الأموية ضد الحكم العباسي، وتراوحت تلك الكتابات بين الأخذ بالروايات التاريخية التي تظهر العباسيين وقد قاموا بعملية إبادة كاملة للأسرة الأموية، فلم ينجُ منهم سوى المتوارين والنساء والأطفال، وأغفلوا تلك الروايات التي تشير إلى شيء من التسامح العباسي تجاه الأمويين، وإلى حياة الكثير من الأمويين بشكل أمن ومستقر في العصر العباسي.
ومن أجل إعطاء صورة واقعية - قدر الإمكان - عن حقيقة وضع الأمويين تحت الحكم العباسي، ودراسة أحوالهم، فقد جاءت هذه الدراسة في خمسة فصول وخاتمة مهدت لها بعرض لأهم المصادر التي قامت عليها.
