عندما يذكر مرض السكر يتبادر فوراً إلى الذهن العمى، فشل الكلية، بتر الأطراف، الجلطة الدماغية وغيرها من المضاعفات الرهيبة إضافة إلى المنغصات من عطش شديد مستمر وجفاف الفم والجلد والذهاب إلى دورة المياه مرات عدة بين فترات متكررة والامتناع عن كل ما لذ وطاب من الطعام والشراب. فيعتقد المصاب أن الحياة تغيرت والنهاية قربت وما عليه إلا الانتظار الحزين للقاء اليوم المحتوم!
لكن هذا ليس صحيحاً قط، إذا عرف المصاب كيف يتعامل مع هذا المرض. ويكون صحيحاً إذا جهله وأنكره وأهمله. فالأعراض التي ذكرت تعتمد على تصرف المصاب أولاً، وعلى بنيته التحتية (تكوينه الجيني) إلى حد معين ثانياً. ويمكن تلخيص هذين الأمرين بكلمتين اثنتين، (الإهمال) الذي يؤدي إلى تلك الأعراض المذكورة آنفاً، و(العناية) التي تجعل ما ذكر أعلاه محض خيال. فالأولى هي اللامبالاة والاستمرار في المضي على نهج الحياة الماضية (قبل الإصابة)، والثانية هي تغيير نمط الحياة، وكبح جماح النفس الذي يتطلب قوة إرادة، وصبرا وقناعة.
وهذا الكتاب يقدم للقارئ جل ما يتعلق بهذا المرض (مرض السكر) بصورة مكثفة مبسطة، دون إطناب غثيث، أو إسهاب جميل، فيذكر طرق تجنبه والسيطرة عليه إن وقع ثم ذكر البحوث الجارية عليه، وخصوصاً العلاج الجيني، مستقبل شفاء الإنسان من أمراض مستعصية، لاستئصال شأفته نهائياً.
