خلال العقود الأخيرة، تبلور وعي إسلامي وازن تجاه أولويات عدّة ذات صلة بمواجهة التطرف ومحاربة الإرهاب، منها: قضية التطرف الديني التي قادت وتقود إلى التكفير والعنف، وقضية الزعم بأنّ الخلافة والإمامة هما ركنٌ من أركان الدين، وقضية العلاقة بالمسيحيين والأديان والعقائد الأخرى، وقضية العيش الوطني أو المشترك، والمواطنة وحقوقها وواجباتها، ولأجل ذلك عقدت عدة مؤتمرات في العالمين العربي والإسلامي، لبحث هذه المشكلات والخروج بمواقف موحدة من خلال إعلانات وبيانات.
والواقع أن تشويهات عبر خمسين أو ستين عاماً أدَّت إلى ظهور التطرف وإستخدام العنف بإسم الدين تجاه المسلمين الآخرين، وتجاه المسيحيين، وتجاه العالم كُلّه، وإزاء كلّ ذلك كان على المسلمين مسؤولياتٌ أولى وكبرى، لأنّ الإنفجار الذي حصل، حصل في دينهم وعقيدتهم ومجتمعاتهم، ولأنهم أول المتضررين من وراء ذلك، ولأن خراباً في البلدان والأوطان والمجتمعات حدث ويحدث، ولأنّ شركاء المسلمين في العيش تأثروا كثيراً بذلك أيضاً، وأخيراً لأن الإسلام تأثر سلباً في العالم نتيجة هذه الأفاعيل.
تعكس الوثائق الستّ المنشورة في الكتاب، خصوصاً وأنها تمثل مؤسسات كبرى وجهات وازنة، حملةً فكريةً وثقافيةً للتصحيح والتحرير والإصلاح، وسعياً حميداً لمواجهة ظواهر التطرف والعنف بالتحليل الفكري، والإتجاه للعمل الإصلاحي والتعاوني مع الأديان والمذاهب الأخرى، من أجل التفكير معاً، والتصرف معاً، وتجديد تجارب العيش معاً، نضعها بين أيدي القرّاء والمهتمين متبوعة بتحليلات لمتخصصين كبار تعميماً للفائدة وتسهيلاً للوصول إلى الغاية المرجوة.
