كان الشعراء والكتاب العظام أمثال جارلس ديكنز، فكترو هوكو، دوستويفسكي، لامارتين وغيرهم من أوائل من نادى بإلغاء عقوبة الموت وإبدعوا في وصف قساوتها وهمجيتها التي تتنافى وقيم المدنية والتحضر وكتبوا فيها آثاراً خالدة من فنون الشعر والنثر.
وكان لإبداعاتهم تلك أبلغ الأثر في تكوين رأي عام ضدها، نتج عنها إلغاؤها من قوانين دول عديدة مع بداية النصف الأخير من القرن الماضي، وأصبحت اليوم عقوبة تخجل منها المجتمعات المعاصرة ومع قليل من التفاؤل فإنه لا يستبعد أن تلغى نهائياً في هذا القرن.
في هذه القصة الرائعة يصف فكتور هوكو مشاعر إنسان محكوم بالموت في آخر يوم من حياته وقد أبدع فيها مثلما أبدع معاصره الروائي العظيم دوستويفسكي في روايته الشهيرة "الأبله" في وصف تلك المشاعر وكيف لا وهو الذي عايش كابوس هذه العقوبة حتى الدقائق الأخيرة قبل أن يفلت منها.
