لم تتناول العلاقات المصرية الأمريكية خلال الفترة موضوع هذا الكتاب أية دراسة مستقلة في السابق، وجاء تناولها غالباً في سياق دراسات عامة لتطور سياسة الولايات المتحدة الخارجية المتعلقة بالمشرق العربي أو في إطار دراسة خاصة بأزمات النزاع العربي الإسرائيلي، وحين اختارت مؤلفة هذا الكتاب الدكتورة مها آل رشيد عنوان بحثها وجدت أن العلاقات الأمريكية العربية بوجه عام والعلاقات الأمريكية المصرية بوجه خاص، كانت موضوعاً لوجهات نظر مختلفة ومتفاوتة في التحليل بحيث بدت للبعض وكأن مسارها مستقر إلى حد ملحوظ، في حين بدت للآخرين منصفة بتقلبات متكررة. سعت المؤلفة إلى تقديم وجهة نظر عربية متوازنة، وبتحليل علمي وبتقويم موضوعي، للعلاقات بين مصر والولايات المتحدة في سياق العلاقات العربية الأمريكية خلال الفترة موضوع الدراسة، وذلك في محاولة جادة وأصيلة للكشف عن تعقيدات هذه العلاقات وتشابكها من جهة ولاكتساب فهم أفضل للأوضاع الراهنة. وقد جهدت المؤلفة في استعمال أكبر مجموعة من مصادر المعلومات العربية والأجنبية التي يمكن للباحث أن يصل إليها. وحاولت قدر استطاعتها تجاوز الصعوبات من أجل الاتصال بمراكز البحث الأجنبية والعربية الموزعة في أماكن متعددة: القاهرة وواشنطن ولندن، للحصول على الوثائق المنشورة وغير المنشورة. ومن ثم عملت على دراسة مصادرها واستخلاص ما يفيد بحثها، ساعدها على ذلك حس علمي مرهف مدعم بدأب ومثابرة، وبكل الاعتزاز والثقة أقدم هذا الكتاب على أمل أن يكون حافزاً للمؤلفة على المثابرة في المجال العلمي الذي رسمته لنفسها.
