"طقطق الورق الناشف تحت قدميها، وغردت عصافير من فوق الأشجار فنظرت مينا صوبها. فجأة سمعت خطواتي فالتفتت بسرعة، لكنني اختبأت في اللحظة المناسبة فواصلت مشيها. بعد خطوات قليلة توقفت أمام شجرة بلوط قديمة وكبيرة، تلفتت حولها ببطء، ولما لم تر شيئاً غريباً همست بصوت خفيض: سي، مي، سو، نا، وكررت: سي، مي، سو، نا، بعدها صمتت وعيناها مثبتتان إلى أعلى الشجرة، ثم أطل رأس غريب، بعينين متعبتين، من بين الأوراق".
نزل الذرة الصفراء، عبارة عن مجموعة من المشاهد، كل مشهد منها في صفحات ثلاث تقريبًا، تعرض قصة عائلة ابتنت نزلًا في قرية نائية، يعتمد أهلها على زراعة الذرة وبيع المحصول في المدينة، والنزل المتواضع يأوي إليه المارون بالقرية، وزوارها، وتشرف عليه الأم التي تعشق الغناء الساذج، ويعتمد عليها الأب أن تدير النزل بينما هو منهمك في العناية بالأرض ومحاصيل الذرة كأي فلّاح طوى سنوات عمره في العناية بأرضه وما ينبت فيها. أما "مينا" ابنة العائلة المدللة، فتعشق الخلطات السرية، والتركيبات الدوائية، وتقضي وقتها في محاولة إيجاد وصفات تنقذ العالم، هكذا هو طموحها الأكبر، وأن تتمكن من استجلاب لبؤة للأسد العجوز "سيسو" الذي اعتنت به منذ اكتشفت وجوده في الغابة، واعتبرته سرها، فهو آخر أسود الغابة، ولا تريد أن يموت فتنقرض الأسود من غابة القرية للأبد. - الحياة الجديدة
