ذات ليلة، وصل كلب الكآبة الأسود إلى مدينة دبلن وسرَقَ العظمة المضحكة منها. وهكذا سيطر شبح الكآبة على تلك المدينة التي كانت الضحكات تغمرها، والسعادة ترفرف فيها شيئاً فشيئاً.
ولحلّ هذه المشكلة، ورسم الابتسامات على وجوه الأحياء والأقرباء والأصدقاء مجدداً، لم يجد أولاد هذه المدينة مناصاً من مطاردة كلب الكآبة الأسود للقضاء عليه؛ مواجهين مخاوفهم ومحاولين السيطرة عليها.
إن المغامرة الشيقة والغريبة التي يخوضها الأولاد في هذه القصة ستنقلك عزيزي القارئ إلى عالم الخيال الواسع والرحب. حيث لا شيء مستحيل.
وهكذا، ستشارك الأبطال شعورهم بالرعب والخوف حيناً، والشجاعة والمرح أحياناً.
من أجواء القصة نقرأ:
"... تستطيع الكلاب وخاصة كلاب مدينة دبلن أن تكون شديدة السخرية. فقط أصغِ إلى نباحها، وخاصة في الساعات المبكرة من الصباح.
كانت الكلاب تعرف أن هناك طريقة واحدة لردع كلب الكآبة الأسود، ولكن كل ما تمكنت من فعله هو المشاهدة وهي مكتوفة الأيدي بينما أخذ الكلب الأسود يطوف خلسة في الليل، ويهيمن على البشر أكثر فأكثر. وأرعبتها رؤيته وهو يصبح جزءاً من هوائهم أو يتسلل إلى داخل بيوتهم، ولاحظت أنه استطاع تغيير مزاج الناس، وقتل ضحكاتهم، ومحو الابتسامات عن وجوههم التي ظلت تبتسم لأعوام، كما استطاع أن يحوِّل نومهم من أحلام سعيدة ومبهجة إلى كوابيس مخيفة ومرعبة...".
