لقد كانت العلاقة بين الإنسان والبيئة تجري بانسجام لتلبية حاجاته. ثم نمت هذه العلاقة، وتضخمت بعد الثورة التقنية، مما أدى إلى زيادة الضغوط على البيئة نتيجة المنحى الأخلاقي والفلسفي السائدين، وافتقار الإنسان إلى الوعي البيئي، فظهرت مشكلات بيئية عديدة كالتلوث بأنواعه، والتصحر، وانحسار الغابات، وانقراض أجناس من الحيوانات والنباتات، بالإضافة إلى مشكلات التمدن، وزيادة الأمراض الاجتماعية كالفقر، والمخدرات، والإيدز... وأصبح العالم اليوم يواجه مشكلات بيئية مقلقة، أدت إلى أحداث اختلال في توازن كثير من النظم البيئية الطبيعية والإنسانية.
لقد دفعت هذه المشكلات علماء العالم ومفكريه أن يوجهوا تحذيراً للبشرية مما يترقبها في المستقبل من أخطاء وذلك من خلال نظام تربوي يعدّ أداة هامة لضبط السلوك الإنساني، وإحداث التغيير المنشود في إعادة التوازن البيئي.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب في هذا الإطار وذلك بهدف تعميق الوعي البيئي، ولدفع القارئ العربي إلى الإسهام في مواجهة قضايا البيئة وحلّ مشكلاتها. ويتضمن الكتاب توضيحاً لمعنى التربية البيئية، وإلقاء الضوء على مفهوم البيئة والنظام البيئي في مواجهة مشكلات البيئة، واقتراح الحلول الملائمة.
