إن هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، يجسّد ثمرة جهد علمي، شكّل سالة ماجستير في الفلسفة، نوقشت في كلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية في جامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت، فهي دراسة تتناول موضوع "العقل ووظيفته منهج فكر الدكتور "زكي نجيب محمود الفلسفي".
يُعد الدكتور "زكي نجيب محمود"، علم من أعلام مفكرينا، وفيلسوف من أبرز فلاسفة فكرنا العربي المعاصر، جمع بين الفلسفة والأدب، فكان بحق كما وصفه العقاد، أديب الفلاسفة وفيلسوف الأدباء.
أعطى لمفهوم العقل أبعاد جديدة ومفيدة في حياتنا الراهنة، فالعقل بداهة - على حد تعبيره - ليس عضواً من أعضاء الجسد كاليدين، والقدمين، والقلب، والمعدة، بل أنه ليس هو "المخ" الذي هو كتلة من مادة تملأ تجويف الجمجمة، بل العقل وظيفة يؤديها من أجهزة البدن ما يؤديها.
كما ميّز بين العضو ووظيفته، فليست اليد هي عملية القبض على الأشياء، وليس الرجلان هما عملية المشي وهكذا، وتتميز تلك الوظيفة بنمط معين من البدن، وتتميز تلك الوظيفة بنمط معين من الأداء هو الذي نسميه عقلاً، فالعقل حركة إنتقالية من شاهد إلى مشهود عليه، ومن دليل إلى مدلول عليه، ومن مقدمة إلى نتيجة تترتب عليها، ومن وسيلة إلى غاية تؤديه إليها تلك الوسيلة، وأهم كلمة في هذا التحديد هي كلمة "حركة" فإذا لم يكن إنتقال من خطوة إلى خطوة تتبعها فلا "عقل".
على أن نصرة العقل عند فيلسوفنا الدكتور "زكي نجيب محمود"، لا تنفي أن يكون في رحاب الحياة الإنسانية جوانب أخرى متروكة للعواطف، فلا هي تعتدي على ميادين العقل، ولا العقل بحاجة إلى الإعتداء عليها.
