الغرض من إعداد هذا الكتاب سد بعض الفراغ في المكتبة العربية عن أدبيات الوثائق الأرشيفية، والذي لمسه المؤلف خلال تدريسه لهذه المادة بقسم الوثائق والمكتبات-كليتي الآداب والبنات بجامعة أم درمان الإسلامية، معهد الوثائق العربي ببغداد، في الفصل الأول تحدث المؤلف عن البنيات الأساسية لخدمة المعلومات بفرض توضيح العلاقة بين المكتبات ودور الوثائق ومراكز التوثيق وأوضح أوجه الشبه والاختلاف بين هذه الشعب الثلاث وأثر ذلك في الإجراءات الفنية والأساليب التقنية التي تتبع لإدارة كل منها.
وخصص الفصل الثاني للتعرف بالأرشيف فتحدث عن المبادئ والأساليب المتبعة في طرق التزويد والترتيب ويشمل ذلك عمليات التقييم وطرق التعرف على الوثائق ذات الفائدة المستديمة. أما الفصل الثالث فخصصه لوصف الأرشيفات التي لا بد منها لتسهيل عمليات التعرف على تقنيات الأرشيف واستخدام أدوات الوصف في طلب الوثائق وإعادتها إلى مكانها الصحيح.
وتناول في الفصل الرابع موضوع حماية الأرشيفات وبين المواضع والأخطاء التي يمكن أن تسبب الضرر للوثائق الأرشيفية، كما تعرض لشرح الطرق والأساليب اللازمة لوقف الأضرار ومعالجة الضرر عن طريق الصيانة والترميم. وتناول في الفصل الخامس موضوع الخدمات التي يقدمها الأرشيف للقراء داخل مباني الأرشيف وخارجه. أما في الفصل السادس فتحدث عن الدور الذي يمكن أن يقوم به الأرشيف في مجال التعليم العام.
