نعيش في عصر الديمقراطية، أو يبدو الأمر كذلك، فإشتراكية الدولة التي بدت شديدة الرسوخ إنهارت في الأوروبتين الوسطى والشرقية، والديمقراطية لا تبدو راسخة في الغرب فحسب، بل وتحظى، من حيث المبدأ، بالتبني على نطاق واسع بوصفها نموذجاً مناسباً للحكم، ففي سبعينيات القرن العشرين كما يمكن وصف ما يزيد على ثلثي العالم بالسلطوية، ولكن هذه النسبة شهدت هبوطاً دراماتيكياً: فأقل من ثلث مجموع الدول هي الآن سلطوية، وعدد الأنظمة الديمقراطية يتنامى بسرعة، بحيث باتت الديمقراطية المعيار الأساسي للمشروعية السياسية حالياً، إذ ما من أحد اليوم إلا ويسلِّم بأنه ديمقراطي، كما أن سائر أنواع النظم السياسية في العالم تصف نفسها بالديمقراطية، ولكن ما تقوله هذه النظم وما تفعله كثيراً ما يكون متبايناً بشكل جوهري بين نظام وآخر.
يطمح هذا الكتاب إلى تحقيق هدفين رئيسيين: إلقاء الضوء على النماذج الكلاسيكية المتمثلة باليونان القديمة: وتقديم سرد نقدي للتصورات الديمقراطية المتعاقبة بعدها.
قصة الديمقراطية، مرويةً بهذه الطريقة، تقدم تقويماً تحليلياً ونقدياً لمجمل النظريات والأفكار السياسية والفكرية التي ساهم أصحابها في رفد وتشكيل النماذج الديمقراطية المطروحة في الكتاب.
