ذكر الحافظ مغلطاي في مقدمة كتابه هذا بأنه "أراد تلخيص سيرة المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم وآثاره من بعده من الخلفاء، كثيرة الفوائد، عارية من الشواهد، منتخبه بغير إكثار، حاويه لمقاصد الكتب الكبار". ومن هذا المنطلق جاءت سيرته مستوعبة لحوادث السيرة أو أكثرها، ولكن عن طريق الإشارة والعبارة القصيرة بغير تفصيل، ولا ذكر دليل. هذا وقد اشتمل الكتاب بالإضافة إلى حوادث السيرة والمغازي على ذكر خصائصه صلى الله عليه وسلم، ودلائل نبوته ومعجزاته، وعلى شمائله وفضائله، وأخلاقه وصفاته.
كما وضم المؤلف إليه فصولاً قصرها على زوجاته وكتابه، ومواليه وخدامه، ودوابه وآلاته صلى الله عليه وسلم. كما ختمه بذكر شيء عن تواريخ الخلفاء إلى عصره. إذن فهي ليست سيرة مختصرة، كما فعل ابن كثير مثلاً في الفصول، وإنما هي إشارات إلى ما جاء في سيرة المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، حاوية لمقاصد الكتب الكبار كما نص المؤلف. بل نجزم أنه قد زاد على كثير من تلك الكتب الكبار بما التقطه من هنا وهناك، ونعني كتب الحديث والتفسير والتاريخ والأدب والنسب بالإضافة إلى كتب السيرة نفسها.
