حظيت جهود المخزومي بإهتمام الدارسين، إلا أنها لم تدرس دراسة مستقلة على ما هو معروف من دراسة جهود المحدثين، فهي وإن تناولها الدارسون لحركة تيسير النحو وتجديده، والعلماء الذين أسهموا بها في العصر الحديث، غير أنهم كانوا يتناولونها ضمناً مع الجهود الأخرى.
ولذا كان لي الشرف في أن أفراد لها هذا الكتاب بعنوان "مهدي المخزومي وجهود النحوية" وقد كان في البدء بعنوان "مهدي المخزومي وجهوده في اللغة والنحو" إلا أن المرحوم المخزومي بتواضعه الجم، اعترض على عبارة "في اللغة" فقال ما نصه: "ليس لدي جهود واضحة في اللغة"، فكان أن أصبح الموضوع على ما مثبت في أعلاه، مشاركة مني في تقديم هذه الشخصية إلى القراء والدارسين والباحثين الذين يرومون الإفادة منها، عسى أن يكون في ذلك إظهار لحقيقة هذه الجهود، وإقرار لما يستحق الإقرار، وأبعاد لما لا يستحق ذلك.
وقد اقتضت طبيعة هذه الدراسة أن تقع في تمهيد وأربعة فصول وخاتمة، تناولت في التمهيد حركة تيسير النحو وتجديده، مقتصراً في ذلك على الخطوط العامة تاركاً التفصيل، فقد كفاني إياه باحثون أجلاء، كان لهم فضل السبق، وأما الفصل الأول، فقد عقدته لبيان حياة المخزومي وآثاره، اقتصرت في بيان حياته على الخطوط العامة التي يمكن من خلالها أن تتضح السمات العامة لهذه الشخصية، واتبعت في آثاره منهجاً يقوم على تقسيم هذه الآثار على: كتبه المطبوعة وبحوثه ومقالاته وآثاره التي اشترك بها مع غيره ومخطوطاته وأدبه، وقد اقتضت آثاره التي اختصت بالبحوث والمقالات أن توزع على وفق التسلسل الزمني، وذلك لبيان التطور أو التدرج الفكري لهذه الشخصية.
