سيرته
عبد الستار الراوي من مواليد بغداد سنة 1941، حصل على الدكتوراه من جامعة الإسكندرية بمصر سنة 1977، عين سفيرا للعراق لدى إيران في الفترة من 1998 وحتى 2003 تاريخ الاحتلال الأمريكي للعراق، وقبل عمله كسفير كان أستاذا للفلسفة بجامعة بغداد.

يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه هذا "إن فكرة تقديم هذه المقدمة الأولية، ليست أكثر من محاولة علمية متواضعة تسعى إلى بسط مبادئ التصوف والباراسايكولوجي، ولعل الحوار حولها، وتبادل الرأي في ما تطرحه من أفكار وتقدمه من ملاحظات، وترتقي إليه من نتائج، تمنح المقدمة قدراً من التعديل والتهذيب، أو توفر لها فرصة إضافية للمراجعة والتقديم، وهي تقاليد تحتمها حرية الرأي، ومبادئ الحوار، ومستلزمات البحث العلمي".
وبهذه الكلمات حدد الباحث هدف دراسته هذه التي جاءت بمثابة مقدمة أولى في الكرامات الصوفية والظواهر النفسية الفائقة. في البداية تحدث عن أصول التصوف، دارساً اتجاهاته ومدارسه، ومقاصده، بعد ذلك قام باستقصاء أصول الباراسايكولوجيا معرفاً بمقدماتها الأساسية ومستقصياً الظواهر فوق الحسية، نفياً وتأييداً، وراداً على الأسئلة التالية: هل توجد فعلاً ظواهر خارقة، وهل يمكن الاستفادة منها في شؤون الحياة؟ ولماذا؟
تقتضي الإحاطة النسبية بأصول التصوف، دراسة اتجاهاته ومدارسه، وفهم عميق لمقاصده، ومعرفة أذواقه ومواجيده، فالمتأمل يلاحظ في حياة الصوفية، وفيما عبروا به عن مذاهبهم، إن النفس الإنسانية هي المحور الرئيس الذي تدور عليه رياضتهم، ومجاهداتهم، وأذواقهم ومواجيدهم، فالتصوف، من هذه الناحية ليس إلا رياضة للنفس، وكبحاً لجماحها، ومجاهدة لأهوائها وتنقية للقلب من أدران الشهوات، وشوائب النزوات، والتصوف بعد هذا كله ذوق ووجد، وفناء عن الآنية، وبقاء في الذات العلية، واتصال بالمنبع الأزلي الأسمى الذي يفيض على الكون، كل ما فيه من آيات الحق والخير والجمال، إن الإحاطة بكل جوانب التصوف أمر متعذر مثل من يريد أن يعرف كل شيء عن التصوف دون أن يسلك طريقه كمثل الذي يتفحص ثمرة لم يذق بعد طعمها و لا عرف نكهتها.
