يبحث هذا الكتاب في تاريخ ونشأة الأصول الفنية لتصاوير المسكوكات الإسلامية حتى سقوط بغداد (256ه/1258م).
والمسكوكات هي النقوش الفنية التي توضع على العملة المتداولة أي النقد والتي اختلفت من بلد لآخر على مر التاريخ. وفي العراق عدت المسكوكات الإسلامية من أهم المصادر الأثرية الدراسة التاريخ فهي تلقي الضوء على كثير من الحوادث في التاريخ الإسلامي، كما تشكل المسكوكات مرآة نقية عاكسة لتلك الحوادث إذ خلد لنا بعضها إنتصار المسلمين على عدوهم كمسكوكة الخليفة المتوكل على الله والمؤرخة سنة 241ه.
وفي هذا الكتاب يدرس الباحث الدكتور "عبد الله خورشيد قادر" نماذج من المسكوكات المصورة التي اختلفت باختلاف العهود منذ زمن الخلفاء الراشدين مرورا بالأمويين والعباسيين والتي اعتبرت ميزة ملازمة لغالبية الحكام المسلمين، ورمزا لكل عصر.
ولمزيد من التفصيل قسم المؤلف دراسته إلى أربعة فصول، تناول الأول منها لمحة في تاريخ المسكوكات منذ نشأتها حتى نهاية العصر الراشدي، وبين في الثاني: موقف الإسلام من التصوير، في القرآن والسنة، وموقف الفقهاء المسلمين وغير المسلمين من التصوير، وفي الفصل الثالث درّس المؤلف نماذج مختارة من المسكوكات المصورة في الإسلام حتى نهاية الخلافة الأموية، ويأتي الفصل الرابع والأخير ليتناول بالتفصيل نماذج مختارة من المسكوكات المصورة في الإسلام حتى نهاية الخلافة العباسية.
هذا، وقد ألحق المؤلف دراسته هذه بصور فوتوغرافية تشكل نماذج حية عن المسكوكات في كافة العصور التي تناولتها الدراسة من مصادر علمية وأثرية موثوقة.
