ينطلق هذا الكتاب من مبدإ أن "الحضارة" صورة لهزات زلزالية، وهو يقسمها إلى ثلاثة أقسام: الأول، وهي الهزات البسيطة، ويرى أن خير تعبير عنها هو وجود التقليعة التي تُترِفُ بها نفسها الأجيال في تعاقبها الزمني، والثاني، وهو ما يسميه الأزاحات الكبيرة، وهذه تلد في قلب الشروخ والتحولات والإنتقالات الواسعة، وقد يطول عمرها الزمني، فيمتد قروناً، وأما القسم الثالث، فهو ما يسميه الهزات المدمرة الكاسحة، وإن هذا القسم ليأتي على مساحات لا يستهان بها من البنية الفكرية والأساس الحضاري لأمة من الأمم دون أن يترك بديلاً سوى الركام والأطلال.
ولقد رافق الفن بوصفه تعبيراً عن النزوع الإنساني وتجلياته هذه الهزات وسجل فيها قدر وجوده، إما تعبيراً عنها او ولادة فيها، ولكن الفن في كل الأحوال لم يكن هو الباعث عليها والمحرك لها، إنه أداة بها يمكن لأبناء التاريخ أن يروا ما حصل وأن يشاهدوا ما حدث.
وإذا افترضنا أن "الحداثة" هي من تجليات تاريخ الهزات الحضارية فإنها، من حيث هي حدث، فعل تقوم به الروح الإنسانية لكي تحقق إنسلاخها ليس فقط عن ماضيها ولكن أيضاً عن حاضرها، وإنها بهذا الفعل لتدمر ما كانته، وتمحق ما هي كائنة به، لا رغبة في بناء مستقبل ما ولكن رغبة في الخلاص من وضع ما! وهكذا نجد إذا ما استعرضنا تاريخ هذه الروح أنها في فعلها لم تخلّف سوى الدمار، ترى أتكون هذه هي صورة "الحداثة"؟.
عندما نتحدث عن "الحداثة" اليوم، والآن، وفي اللحظة الراهنة، فإننا نتحدث عن الماقبل، فأين الحداثة من المابعد؟
وإننا عندما نتحدث عن الحداثة بوصفها حركة، فإننا لا نستطيع أن ننكر أن ما بعد الحداثة يبشر بعودة إلى ماقبلها، فأين هي الحداثة من الماقبل؟
