إن اهتمام العرب بالمياه، وحرصهم على المحافظة عليها دفعهم إلى الاهتمام بالمطر والسحاب، وما يتعلق بهما من برق ورعد وصعيق، فعرفوا الأنواء، ودفعهم الاهتمام بالمطر إلى الاهتمام ببروج السماء، فورد ذكرها في أشعارهم، وكانوا ينسبون لكل نجم من المنازل نوراً يجعلونه علماً ووقتاً له، كما يجعلون الشتاء ووقتاً للمطر.
وبعد فإن كتاب الأنواء والأزمنة الذي بين أيدينا يجمع بين دفتيه هذا العلم مما أتت عليه مذاهب العرب في تسمية الأشياء وفلكها وقطبها وبروجها ومنازلها والمشهور من سائر نجومها، ومعنى المراقبة والمطالعة والثور ودقته ومدته والشمس والقمر والكواكب الخمس الخنس وأسمائها وصفاتها وتسمية الليالي والأيام والشهور والأعوام والسنة الشمسية التي لا يزول حسابها والأزمنة وفصولها على مذاهب العرب ومذاهب أهل الحساب وما إلى ذلك مما يتعلق بأحوال العرب وتعلقهم بالسماء، لتعيين معايشهم في الأرض. وهو يعتمد في بعض نصوصه على كتب الأنواء الأولى قبل كتاب الأنواء لابن قتيبة، وينقل نصوصاً عن ابن كناسة والأموي وغيرهم ممن ألف في هذا الباب ونصوصاً من كتب الأزمنة والأمكنة للمرزوقي.
