يعد البث التلفزيوني الفضائي المباشر من أهم التطورات التقنية في مجال الإتصالات في عقد التسعينيات من القرن العشرين، فقد أتاحت تقنيات الإتصال الحديثة إمكانات هائلة في تطوير وسائل التوزيع والبث، فإلى جانب أقمار البث المباشر التي تستطيع أن تبث عبر القنوات التلفزيونية إلى المستقبلين في المنازل مباشرة من دون أن تمر على محطات أرضية.
هناك أيضاً شبكات التوزيع الأرضية أو شبكات الكوابل التي توزع الإشارات على المشتركين في الخدمة التلفزيونية، وفي ضوء حلقات التطور فقد تعددت أقمار الإتصالات وزادت إمكاناتها وقدرتها على حمل المزيد من القنوات التي يمكن تخصيصها للتلفزيون أو الإذاعة أو لنقل البيانات والمعلومات.
وبدأ إستخدام النظام الرقمي والإشارة المضغوطة التي ضاعفت من عدد القنوات الفضائية عدة مرات على القمر الواحد، مما ساهم في إطلاق قنوات متخصصة (أفلام - أطفال - أغاني - رياضية - إخبارية - دراما،... وغيرها)، هذه الإمكانات شجعت الدول على إستخدام القنوات القضائية سواء في تغطية كامل التراب الوطني بالبث التلفزيوني أو الوصول إلى الخارج أيضاً، وتحت أية ظروف وفي أسرع وقت ممكن، إذ أن تقنيات الإتصال الحديثة ألغت عنصري الزمان والمكان.
وهكذا، فإن هذا الكتاب يحاول أن يقدم قراءة لواقع القنوات الفضائية من خلال المحاور التي تمت ذكرها في المقدمة، بأسلوب واضح وبسيط يلائم كافة الفئات المستهدفة، ويعينها على الإستفادة المثلى منه، وأسأل الله العلي القدير أن ينفع بهذا الكتاب الأكاديميين، والطلاب، والإعلاميين، والباحثين والمهتمين بالإعلام الفضائي.
