إنها بحق لأول حرب تجرى وقائعها على الهواء وأصبح فيها المشاهد العادى الذى تسمر أمام أجهزة التلفاز جنرالا فى غرفة العمليات التى تدير العمليات العسكرية, فهو يطلع على مجريات الحرب لحظة بلحظة.
وما بين أمانى وعواطف العرب بأن الأمريكيين سيسقطون على أبواب بغداد, إلى الانهيار السريع وسقوط بغداد وسط ذهول العامة المتابعين والمحللين و الخبراء المتخصصين الذين روج الكثير منهم لحرب طويلة تستنزف الأمريكيين. وسادت الشارع العربى أجواء من الصمت والاكتئاب وهو غير مصدق لما يراه على شاشات الفضائيات
نقلت الفضائيات الغريبة جانبا من الصورة, ونقلت الفضائيات العربية الجانب الآخر الذى تجاهله معظم مصورى الغرب أو حجب رغم إرادتهم, ضحايا من المدنيين قتلى وجرحى بالآلاف وعراقيون يهينهم الجنود الغزاة.
وخلاصة الأمر, فإن وسائل الإعلام كانت العنصر الرئيسى فى الحرب الأخيرة وأدرك البنتاغون (وزارة الدفاع الأمريكية) تماما أن الرأى العام سيتأثر بالتغطية الإعلامية للحرب, لذا عمل منذ البداية على إخراج هذه الحرب على شاشات التلفاز بصورة لا تجعل الرأى العام ينقلب على القوات الأمريكية حتى لو اضطر للتضليل أو التلفيق.
