يركز هذا الكتاب بصورة أساسية على تحديد القانون وعلاقته بالعدل، وبعلم القانون، وببنية المنظومة أو نمط التحليل القانوني المتبع. (وقد شاع استخدام عبارة فلسفة القانون منذ بداية القرن التاسع عشر وبخاصة بعد صدور مبادئ فلسفة القانون للفيلسوف الكبير هيغل. وحتى وقت قريب كانت فلسفة القانون تمارس بصورة مختلفة بحسب البلد. وفي فرنسا كان دور فلسفة القانون لفترة طويلة ضعيفاً.
وهكذا كانت المؤلفات المكتوبة أو المترجمة قليلة جداً وبالتالي فإن فرنسا بقيت بعيدة عن السجالات الكبرى في هذا الشأن يعرض مؤلف هذا الكتاب لماهية فلسفة القانون ويطرح بعض المسائل الكلاسيكية الكبرى التي تلامس أساساً شكل القانون والتحليل القانوني. ويبين الفارق بين علوم الطبيعة والقانون نفسه، ويعرض لطبيعة القواعد القانونية ولطبيعة العناصر التي تشكل أساس هذه القواعد.
تكتسب فلسفة القانون أهمية متزايدة في مجال دراسة القانون، سواء لجهة فهم عملية "خلق" القواعد القانونية أم لجهة تطبيق هذه القواعد على يد المشتغلين في القانون، من قضاة ومحامين وأساتذة قانون. كما نعلم أن فلسفة القانون غدت مادة في منهاج دراسة القانون في جامعات عديدة وهي بدون شك سوف تحتل مكانها ضمن منهاج إجازة الحقوق في الجامعة اللبنانية. من هنا أتت رغبتنا في نقل هذا الكتاب إلى اللغة العربية، بتشجيع من زملائنا في كلية الحقوق (الفرع الرابع) في الجامعة اللبنانية وكذلك زملائنا في كلية الحقوق في جامعة مونبلييه (دومنيك روسو، نور الدين بالعباس، وألكسندر فيالا) وصاحب هذا المؤلف، فيلسوف القانون الأكثر لمعاناً في فرنسا الأستاذ ميشيل تروبير.
