كل منا بحث عن جزيرة، يتصورها حسب الآمال التي يجري وراءها، دون الفوز بها. فمثلنا كمثل "الفارس المالطي" في هذه الرواية، الذي يبحث عن جزيرة "اسكونديدا" وكلما بدا لنا أنه عثر عليها، بقي شيء في دخيلته يتنازعه ويجعله يقطع بأن تلك الجزيرة ليست "اسكونديدا" التي يبحث عنها، وهكذا كل حالم بجزيرة ما يقضي كامل العمر في البحث عن جزيرته دون بلوغها، تقف مراكبه أمام الجزيرة المأمولة، دون القدرة على النزول إليها، فتمر الأيام بين الحسرة على الأمس وحيرة اليوم والرجاء في الغد.
هكذا يقف روبارتو في الرواية متأملاً جزيرته، دون أن يتمكن من بلوغها. وتصير "دافني" السفينة المهجورة التي يجد روبارتو نفسه على متنها النقطة الثابتة التي يتحرك فيها بندول حياته متأرجحاً بين ماضيه، حاضره، ومستقبله. يرتبط في أحداث الرواية ومجرياتها الماضي بالحاضر، يتحرر الراوي فيها من قيود الزمن من خلال شخصية الشيخ التي أضفت على الطابع العام للرواية بعداً فلسفياً من خلال تفسيره للكون من منظار جديد، وتكشف من خلال روبارتو أسرار الدنيا من زوايا لم تكن تخطر له على بال ليعود بعد وفاة الشيخ إلى سابق وحدته، وليتصور تواصلاً لقصته التي يصبح لها غد، يعبر بخيالٍ، ماضيه وحاضره خط الهاجرة الذي يفصل يومه عن أمسه ليعيد كتابة حياته، وليعطيها خاتمة تاق إليها في أعماق أحلامه ونفسه.
