يعيش "جاك تونسيند" حياة بائسة، تطارده فيها أشباح الحادث الذي فقد فيه زوجته وابنته ليلة إعصار، إلى أن يقابل "سارة ويتمان" وابنتها المعوقة "جيني" هذه الأخيرة تذكره بابنته التي فقدها ويتعلق بها قلبه، كما يرتبط بوالدتها عاطفياً. ولكن "سارة" هي الأخرى في حياتها مأساة جعلتها تنتقل للعيش مع ابنتها في "فلورانس". حياة فقر ووحدة. وهذه المأساة تمنعها من قبول عرض "جاك" منها بالزواج، لكن كيف وصل "جاك" إلى الحال يستطيع معها أن يعرض عليها الزواج؟ وكيف ترفض بعد كل هذا؟ وما الذي ستنتهي إليه قصتها؟ هذا ما ستعرفه من خلال أوراق هذه الرواية التي صورت عمق مشاعر الحب والمعاناة معاً.
