تستند رواية «تاييس الأثينية» إلى القصة التاريخية اليونانية المعروفة: إحراق برسيبوليس - إحدى عواصم الإمبراطورية الفارسية - من قبل غيتِر أثينية مشهورة، شاركت في حملة الإسكندر المقدوني.
تسرد الرواية هذه القصة المدهشة بكل ما تنطوي عليه من أحداث تتعلق بحياة تاييس وبالحياة السياسية والحربية الدينية والجغرافية والاجتماعية والأدبية في تلك الحقبة التي ما كان انتماء الرواية إليها عبثاً، ذلك أن هذه الفترة الزمنية هي فترة انعطاف التاريخ. علماً أن المؤلف حافظ على الوثائق التاريخية المتوافرة كاملةً في الرواية، وابتدع فقط المصير المجهول للشخصيات التاريخية، وأقحم شخصيات جديدة من بنات أفكاره.
