هذا الكتاب ثمرة المحاضرات والآراء التي دونتها من أساتذتي عندما كنت طالباً في جامعتي لا يبزك وهانوفر في ألمانيا في الفترة من 1958 وحتى 1973، وكذلك اختلاطي الفضولي والعلمي بهم أمثال البروفيسور هانز ماير، وشوبرت بتسولد، والدكتور كلاوس شومان وغيرهم.
وقد تناول بدايات المسرح الألماني الذي وضع لبناته الكاتب المسرحي كوتولد افرايم لسنك (1821-1789)، كما عالجت أهم آرائه ومفاهيمه النقدية والجمالية التي تتلمذ عليها خيرة المسرحيين الألمان، والتي أفرزت لنا فيما بعد كيورك بوشنر، ورانز فيدة كند، وكيرهارد هوبتمان، وفريدريش فولف وبرتولت برشت وغيرهم. وركزت في الكتاب على أهم مرحلة في المسرح ألماني، وهي مرحلة ظهور مسرح برشت وثورته الجديدة في المسرح..
لقد شرحت علاقة برشت واهتماماته بالآداب العالمية الأخرى منذ شبابه وكيفية تحوله إلى تبني فلسفة الديالكتيك (الجدل). كما تناولت شرح أبرز ملامح المسرح الملحمي والمسرح التعليمي، وقدمت بعض النماذج منها، كما شرحت طريقة برشت في التمثيل والإخراج المسرحي التي طبقها في مسرحه (برليز انسامبل) في برلين الديمقراطية، والذي أسسه عام 1949 بعد عودته من المنفى.
كما تناولت طريقة برشت في استخدام الموديل المسرحي (النموذج) في المسرح، وشرحت أهم آرائه حول ذلك.
