تعد دراسة مناهج المحدثين من الدراسات الحديثة، في مجال الحديث وعلومه، وإذا رجعنا إلى مصنفات الأقدمين، فإنا لا نجد هذا الموضوع قائماً بذاته، ويحمل هذا الإسم، أما في عصرنا فقد تطورت الدراسات المتعمقة، وبخاصة الدراسات المتعلقة بكتب التراث، التي تعتبر مصدراً غنياً بالمعلومات العامة، في شتى مجالات العلوم، وأما في مجال الحديث وعلومه، فإن كتب التراث هي المصدر الوحيد الذي تعتمد عليه الدراسات الحديثة المتخصصة.
ونحن اليوم نشهد ثورة حقيقية في مجال تحقيق كتب التراث ونشرها، فقد أصبحنا أمام عشرات كتب الحديث الجامعة، ومصنفاته الكبرى، التي كانت حصيلة جهود العلماء عبر عصور متلاحقة، إذ أنها تشكل فيما بينها إتصالاً وثيقاً، وتكاملاً في مجال جمع حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
ونظراً لإختلاف العصور، وإختلاف الأمصار، وتعدد المدارس الحديثية، وتعدد مناهجها في التصنيف، والجمع والشروط، وذلك بإختلاف الوسائل والقدرات والأهداف، فقد أصبحنا اليوم أمام أشكال متعددة وصور متنوعة من الإبداعات في مجال تصنيف الحديث.
من هنا، تأتي أهمية تخصيص مساق من أجل التعرف إلى عدد من أمهات كتب الحديث لأشهر المصنفين، وسبل الإفادة منها، والتعريف بالقواعد والأسس التي التزمها كل منهم، ويؤدي هذا في نهاية المطاف إلى تنمية التفكير العلمي والمنهجي لدى الدارس؛ مما يعينه على تكوين مهارة في أساليب البحث العلمي وينمي عنده روح الإبداع والتطوير وفق أسس علمية مدروسة.
