دفعني إلى هذا الموضوع ثلاثة دوافع مجتمعة: أوّلها: أنّ أكثم رجل قديم قد طعن في السّن العالية، فعلته كبرة وعرته فترة، سمع برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلّم فعقد العزم على لقياه، ومضى في طريقه إليه، وما هي إلاّ أن أدركه الموت، فنزل فيه قرآن.
ثانيها: أنّه أسبق بليغ صدر عنه تصوّر بلاغّي وعلى غير ما نعهد لدى مؤّرخي البلاغة العربيّة.
ثالثها: أنّه توفّر لدينا من تراثه ما وثّقته المصادر التي صدرنا عنها، وهو صورة من الأسلوب القديم صاغته التجربة، وحاكته السنون.
ولم يكن بدّ من هذا العنوان الذي ألحّ عليّ في غير رفق، وقد جاذبته مراراً فأبى، وحاورته فاستعصى... أكثم بن صيفّي البليغ البلاغيّ.
