يعد سيبويه أهمّ تلميذ للرعيل الأول من أئمة اللغة، ويُعَدُّ أوّل عالم يُوَجّه جهوده الذهنية نحو الدّرس النحوي بمعناه الواسع، إذ قبل سيبويه لم يكن هناك - في الغالب - متخصّصون في النحو، ولم يكن للدرس النحوي تخطيط معيّن ولا منهجٌ مُحَدَّد، كما أنّ معالمه قبل سيبويه لم تكن واضحة.
وليس من شكِّ في أنّ سيبويه قد عزل عن النحو كثيراً من القضايا البعيدة عن ميدانه، ومَهَّدَ بذلك الطريق للمباحث النحوية الخالصة، فكان علماً من أعلام النحو العربي، وشخصيةً من ألمع الشخصيات العلمية، وأقواها أثراً، وأدقّها فكراً، وأعمقها عقلاً، وأكثرها تجرّداً للعلم والإبداع؛ وقد ذاع صيته في الآفاق، ونال من الشهرة ما لم يَنَلْهُ نحويٌّ آخر.
غير أنّه على الرغم من ذلك أثار بعض دارسي النحو العربي مشكلة ما زلنا نَلْمِسُ آثارها إلى الآن، وهي أنّ علماء النحو ينقسمون مدرستين، مدرسةَ البصرة، ومدرسة الكوفة؛ ويرى هؤلا أنّ لكل مدرسة منها خصائصَها التي تميّزها من الأخرى في المنهج، والأسلوب، وأصول الإحتجاج.
وأوغل بعضهم في هذا، حتى ظهرت مصنّفات عدّة تبحث في هاتين المدرستين، وتعالج قضايا النحو على أنّها من نتاج هذه المدرسة أو تلك، وتُعْنَى بمسائل الخلاف بين البصريين والكوفيين.
ولكنّ النظرة المتمهّلة المتأمّلة تعجل الدارس المتبصّر بالنحو وأصوله يرى أنّ مصدر هاتين المدرستين هو كتاب سييبويه، وأنّه المنبع الذي استقى منه النحويون البصريون والكوفيون على السواء أصول مادتهم العلمية في مصنفاتهم.
لهذا السبب، اختار المؤلف دراسة "كتاب سيبويه وأثره في نحاة الكوفة حتى القرن الرابع الهجري" في هذا الكتاب الذي أعدّه لنيل درجة الدكتوراه في الآداب وعلومها.
وجاء البحث في تمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة، أما التمهيد فأودعه الكلام على سيبويه وكتابه، وأما الباب الأول من البحث فموضوعه: نحويو الكوفة وتأثّرهم بكتاب سيبويه، وأما الباب الثاني فعقده للحديث عن أثر كتاب سيبويه في الظواهر النحوية والصوفية عند الكوفيين، وأما الباب الثالث فكان لدراسة أصول الإحتجاج بقطبيه (السماع والقياس) في كتاب سيبويه وأثره في نحاة الكوفة.
ثم ختم الكتابة بخاتمة أوجز فيها أهم نتائج البحث.
