بدأت منذ أعوام قليلة حركة الترجمة والكتابة العربية في الدلالة سواء في الأطر العلمية أو الصحفية وما يقرب منها، لكن الموقف تجاه علم الدلالة يحتاج إلى إيضاح، ذلك أنه سيقوم بمهمة بالغة الأثر في الجوانب العلمية والأدبية وأساليب الاتصال في الحياة اليومية. وعن الاتجاه في الدراسات اللغوية العربية يقول المؤلف بأنه يتجه في هذه الدراسات، وبالأخص الدلالة، إلى الاستفادة من الثقافات على أن تكون أدوات تعين على إضاءة الأصول العربية وتساعد على تنمية قدراتها في عصرنا، فيأخذ ما يفيد، ويرد ما يجافي ماهية لغتنا ومسارها التاريخي، فهكذا كان الشأن لدى علمائنا وفلاسفتنا منهم تملكوا ناحية العلوم فأغنوها برؤاهم، وبالثقافة الأجنبية التي لم تكن حرفية، وإنما غدت لديهم متميزة بطابعها العربي.
ضمن هذا الإطار تأتي هذه الدراسة ليقدم من خلالها الباحث البرهان على أصالة "علم الدلالة العربي" عند الباحثين العرب من اللغويين والفلاسفة والأصوليين والفقهاء والنقاد والأدباء، ذلك انه درس معالم هذا العلم كما يبحثه العلماء في اللغات المعاصرة (الفرنسية، الإنكليزية والألمانية...) مفتشاً عما يقابلها في الكتابات العربية، ليجد أعمالاً أصيلة ودقيقة نظمها وأعطاها نسقاً له تكامله فتشكلت بنياناً متماسكاً قادراً على النماء والتفاعل في مجالات العلم والأدب والحياة عامة. ويمكن القول بأن هذا الكتاب فصول تلتقي معالم أصيلة للدلالة العربية (في ماهية الدلالة، والمنهج المعياري، والتطور التاريخي للدلالة، والمجاز) مع ترتيبها وبنائها في ضوء المعارف الحديثة، وإضافة هي تطبيقات الباحث في المعجم الشعري.
