"في البداية كانت المرأة هي المسيطرة، وهذه الحقيقة لا تعترف بها مجتمعات الرجال التي قد يعتبرونها شذوذاً عن الوضع الطبيعي. كانت المرأة هي المعبود الأول في التاريخ، حيث كانت المرأة تعتبر خالقة قوة الحياة. كانت تعبد كالإله الكبرى، منبع كل النشاط الاجتماعي. ولهذا استخدمت النساء ككاهنات في العصور الأولى، وكانت في طقوسها ورقصاتها تمثل الصلة بين الخالقة والإنسان.
ولما كانت للمرأة هذه المكانة في المجتمع كن يتحكمن في علاقاتهن الجنسية". هكذا بدأ المؤلف "محمد صادق صبور" نص كتابه الذي بين أيدينا والذي يجمع فيه كل ما تجمع لديه من معلومات عن تاريخ البغاء في العالم وهدفه الكشف عن السبب الأساسي الذي دفع المرأة إلى امتهان هذه المهنة فتبين له وبعد بحث دقيق شمل العصور المظلمة، والعصور الوسطى، عصري النهضة والإصلاح الديني، عصر الانحلال، القرن العشرين أن السبب الأساسي الكامن وراء البغاء اليوم-في عصرنا الحالي-هو حاجة النساء للمال، أما السبب الكامن وراء البغاء في العصور القديمة هو إرضاء الآلهة والتقرب منها.
