وقد تساءلنا حين جمعناها في كتاب هل ينبغي لنا أن نمعن في فحص آراء من سبقونا، وأن تنشئ نقداً منظماً لنظريات المضحك فرأينا أن ذلك يؤدي إلى تعقيد هذا العرض تعقيداً بالغاً، ويخرج لنا كتاباً غير متناسب مع خطورة الموضوع الذي نعالج.
ورأينا من جهة أخرى أننا قد ناقشنا التعريفات الأساسية للضحك مناقشة ضمنية تارة، صريحة تارة أخرى، وإن تكن موجزة على أي حال، حين كنا نضرب مثالاً يذكر بتعريف من تلك التعريفات.
لذلك اقتصرنا على إثبات مقالاتنا الثلاث، ولم نزد على أن أضفنا إليها قائمة بالأبحاث الرئيسية التي تناولت موضوع المضحك، وظهرت في السنين الثلاث السابقة.
