لا نخفي في هذا الكتاب انحيازنا لخيار الحداثة والتحديث السياسي، بل إننا نذهب في ذلك إلى ما هو أبعد، فنحاول نقد صور المخاذلة والتردد والتراجع التي أصبحت تشكل اليوم سمات بارزة في خطاباتنا السياسية لكن دفاعاً عن لزوم الإنخراط في الإصلاح السياسي والإصلاح الثقافي لا يستهل مطلب الإصلاح، قدر ما يعمل على محاولة تفكيك أسئلته وإبراز حدودها التاريخية بطريقة في العمل لا تتردد في وضع يدها على مظاهر العطب والخلل، بهدف الـأكيد على إمكانية تدارك التأخر التاريخي السائد في مختلف مظاهر حياتنا في الفكر والمجتمع والسياسة.
إن الدفاع عن الحداثة السياسية كما عبرنا عنه في أغلب مقالات هذا الكتاب يعني تمثل قيمة المشروع السياسي الحداثي في استناده أولاً وقبل كل شيء إلى مقدمات العقل النقدي ذلك أننا نعتبر أن الدفاع عن الحداثة السياسية يعني الإحتكام إلى سلطة العقل والنقد، ولهذا السبب دافعنا وندافع عن أهمية الخيارات العقلانية والتنويرية في الفكر السياسي العربي المعاصر، لأنها تملك أكثر من غيرها القدرة على إسناد مشروع النهوض العربي وتطوير مرجعيتنا في الفكر السياسي.
