كتاب "التواصل والتاريخ" هو بمثابة عملية إستكشاف داخل النص الريكوري، لإمكانية العثور على فلسفة ما للتاريخ تضطلع بمهمة إستعادة التفكر الفلسفي في التاريخ تحت مظلة مفهوم براديغماتي جديد هو مفهوم "التواصل"، وهي إمكانية ظلت غائبة عن مجال فلسفة التاريخ التأملية منظوراً إليها كفلسفة تتحرك ضمن براديغم "الوعي الذاتي".
غير أننا نفترض أن هذه الإمكانية لم تتشكل في وعي ريكور الفلسفي لمجرد التحول البراديغماتي من فلسفة الوعي إلى فلسفة التواصل، بل تشكلت نتيجة إيمانه العميق والمبدئي بفكرة التواصل، لا كواقعة لغوية صريحة أو كبنية للحدث الكلامي وحسب، إنما كبنية للمعرفة الحقة وكنمط أصيل للوجود - في العالم، من حيث هو وجود زماني، ومن ثم وجود تاريخي بالأساس.
إن التواصل الذي نبحثه في هذا الكتاب إذن، ليس هو التواصل اللساني موضوع علوم الإتصال واللسانيات البنيوية، إنما هو تواصل من نمط آخر، يجد تجذره في ضرب من الممارسة التأويلية للكتابة التاريخية المعاصرة، وهو ما ندعوه في إثر "بول ريكور" ذاته "بالتواصل على النمط التاريخي".
