رأى نفسه مرتدياً دشداشةً بيضاء، ونسرين موثقةً بحبل سميك إلى جذع نخلة الواشنطونيا، كانت عاريةً تماماً وجسدها مزرقاً كجثة متروكة، يتوزع حولها بضعة جنود مارينز يدخنون بشراهة، وكلما انتهى أحدهم من تدخين سيجارته أطفأها في موضع ما من جسدها، تارةً بين شفتيها، وأخرى في حلمتها، وتارةً أسفل بطنها، فتصرخ المسكينة من الألم بصوت ذي زنين يتردد صداه في الفضاء كصوت يخرج من بئر، وتضرب رأسها على جذع النخلة ضربات متتاليةً حتى ينزف منه الدم.
لم تكن ثمة حركة في الشارع سوى الحركة التي تبعثها الريح في أغصان الشجر، وقرقعة المخلفات المعدنية على الأرصفة، وكأن المدينة تحت حذر تجوال، والسماء ملبدة بسحاب أسود تقليل ينذر بحدوث عاصفة في أية لحظة...
