تحتل المرأة مهمة في أعمال اثنان من عمالقة الشرق هما عباس محمود العقاد ونزار قباني، ولإن القارئ العربي شغوف لمعرفة كيف كان ينظر كل من العقاد والقباني إلى المرأة خاض "عصام الحلبي" هذه المغامرة في كتابه "المرأة بين عباس العقاد ونزار قباني". يقول المؤلف "... قد يتبادر إلى الأذهان –أو بعبارة أدق- قد يعتقد السواد الأكبر من الناس، أن نزاراً هو نصير المرأة، وأن العقاد عدو لها. من الخطأ، أو من الظلم، أن نأخذ هذه المقولة بإطلاقها ... فالرجلان ليسا كذلك.. القباني دافع عن المرأة في بعض قصائده، إلا أنه قد هبط بها في قصائد أخرى. وقد سئل عن الإختصاص الذي تابعه في الجامعة السورية... فقال: درست الحقوق، وتخرجت محامياً ولكننب لم أدافع كمحامي إلا عن المرأة والحرية، دافعت عن الأنثى وعن الوطن العربي الكبير (...) والعقاد لم يكن عدواً للمرأة، وحياته حافلة بعلاقات مع أكثر من واحدة، ولعل حبه لسارة وهند حبه للمرأة من جهة، وبين آرائع فيها من جهة أخرى (...)".
وفي هذا الكتاب يورد المؤلف الكثير من المساجلات بين العقاد ونزار، ويلقي الضوء على كواليس حياة الرجلين في علاقتهما بالمرأة وبالمجتمع، ورأي كل منهما بالمرأة بصفتها أنثى وأم ومربية، وشيئاً عن علاقة أبو خليل القباني بنزار قباني، وأخيراً قصائد منتقاة هي (من روائع نزار قباني) تضم أربعة عشرة قصيدة في الشعر الغزلي والوطني.
