شارل ديدييه (بالفرنسية: Charles Didier ) شاعر وروائي وكاتب وصحفي ورحالة فرنسي ولد في مدينة جنيف عام 1805م، بعد هروب عائلتة إليها طلبا للحرية الدينية. ألف كتاب الإقامة مع شريف مكة العظيم (بالفرنسية: Charles Didier ) سجل فيه رحلتة من القاهرة إلى سانت كاترين في سيناء، السويس، الطور، ينبع، جدة، الطائف والعودة إلى جدة في عام 1834.

لم تلق المؤلفات الفرنسية المتصلة بالجزيرة العربية إلى اليوم الاهتمام الذي يليق بأهميتها في إجلاء كثير من تاريخ هذه المنطقة المهمة من العالم.
ولأهمية هذه المؤلفات نقدم هذه الترجمة للرحالة الفرنسي شارل ديدييه إلى الحجاز لكونها تعرض صورة واضحة عن الحياة السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية بها في أوائل النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر، وهي فترة تقل مصادرها.
وتقدم الرحلة معلومات ثرة سواء كانت جغرافية أو اجتماعية أو اقتصادية عن الأماكن التي مر بها ديدييه انطلاقاً من السويس حتى الطور، وجبل سيناء، والبحر الأحمر، وينبع، وجدة، والطائف.
ومن فوائد هذا الكتاب أن مؤلفه يركز في البشر بطباعهم ولباسهم ومساكنهم مما يجعله محط اهتمام علماء الأنثرولوجيا (الإناسة)، وعلماء الاجتماع والجغرافيا.
ومع أن ديدييه ينفي أن تكون رحلته مهمة رسمية، أو أن لها هدفاً سياسياً، إلا أن توليه مهمات سياسية لمصلحة بلده في أطوار حياته يدعو إلى التساؤل: هل كان ديدييه مبعوث نابليون الثالث لاستكشاف منطقة الحجاز؟
ويكشف الكتاب -أيضاً- ملامح من حياة هذا الرحالة الحافلة، والتي انتهت بصورة مأساوية بانتحاره بعد أن فقد بصره.
